Ahmed Ghoneim

Dr. Ahmed Farouk Ghoneim is a Professor of Economics at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University, and a research fellow at the Economic Research Forum. He also fulfills the role of a consultant for several international organizations, including the World Bank, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the Arab League. He is also an adjunct professor at a number of Egyptian and foreign universities.

Dr. Ghoneim holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany and a Master’s degree in Development Economics from the Institute of Social Studies in Netherlands. His expertise lies in trade policy, regional trade integration, the multilateral trading system, the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the economics of intellectual property. He has numerous internationally published research papers in political economy and trade policy.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ghoneim has held several executive positions. He served as an advisor to Egypt’s Ministers of Trade and Industry on foreign trade and international agreements. He was also the deputy head of the Economics and Financial Research Center and the head of the European Studies Center at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University. From 2014 to 2018, he was Egypt’s Cultural Counselor and Head of the Educational Mission in Germany, Austria, and ten other countries.

From August 2020 to October 2024, he was the first CEO of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC). In October 2024, he was appointed as the first CEO of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), besides being an advisor to the Minister of Investment and Trade on foreign trade issues.

He was also a board member of Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank in 2021, representing Egypt’s National Investment Bank. Presently, he is a board member of NMEC, GEM, the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the Tourism and Antiquities Support Fund, the Tourism Promotion Authority, Edita Food Industries, Delta Insurance, and Export Development Bank as representative of National Bank. He is also a member of the board of trustees of the academy of Exporting and member of the foreign trade committee at the Federation of Egyptian Industries.
